The importance of this law is that it prohibits discriminating against people living with disabilities. It has five sections providing protections which focus on employment, public services, public accommodations, telecommunications, and miscellaneous items.

President George H.W. Bush signed the bill into law and shared the following thoughts: “Three weeks ago, we celebrated our nation’s Independence Day, and today we’re here to rejoice in and celebrate another Independence Day, one that is long overdue, with today’s signing of the landmark Americans with Disabilities Act, every man, woman, and child with a disability can now pass through once-closed doors into a bright, new era of equality, independence, and freedom.”

The passage of this law has had a tremendous impact on members of the disability community by focusing on improving access, yet there is still room for improvement. People with disabilities continue face many barriers and discrimination.
