What Happens When You Call a Clinic
Calling a clinic for the first time can feel like a lot. Here is what to expect.
Have this ready: your child’s name and date of birth; your Umpqua Health member ID number; a short note about what you are worried about.
Good questions to ask: Are you taking new patients right now? Do you see children my child’s age? How long is the wait for a first visit? Do I need a referral from my child’s doctor?
If the wait is long, you still have options. Ask to be put on a waiting list. Then call us at 541-229-4842. We can look for other clinics and help you find care while you wait.
Resources for Your Appointment
Words To Know
Behavioral health
This covers both mental health and drug or alcohol use. You will see this phrase a lot. It just means care for how your child thinks, feels, and acts.
Social and emotional health
This means how your child feels inside and how they get along with other people. A child with good social and emotional health can name what they feel. They can calm down when they get upset. They can make friends and keep them. All kids struggle with this sometimes. If your child struggles a lot, or it does not get better, help is out there.
Substance use disorder
This means a person cannot stop using drugs or alcohol, even when it hurts them. It is not a choice. It is not bad behavior. It is a health problem, like asthma or diabetes. Doctors can treat it, and people do get better.
Crisis line
A phone number you can call any time, day or night, when things feel urgent. You do not need an appointment. You do not need to be sure it is an emergency. If you are worried, call.
Walk-in visit
A visit where you show up without an appointment. You may wait a while, but you will be seen that day.
Referral
A note from your child’s doctor saying your child needs to see someone else. Some clinics ask for one before they will book a visit. Many do not. Ask the clinic when you call.
Intake
Your first visit or first phone call with a new clinic. Someone asks questions about your child so they can pick the right care. It is not treatment yet. It is how they get to know your child.
Waitlist
A list you join when a clinic has no openings. They call you when a spot opens. You can be on more than one waitlist at a time. Call us at 541-229-4842 and we can help you look for care while you wait.
Wraparound
A program that builds one plan for your whole family instead of just your child. A team meets with you, and you help decide what the plan says. A referral is required but can come from anyone involved with the child, even a parent. After a referral packet is reviewed, a screening will be completed.
IIBHT (Intensive In-Home Behavioral Health Treatment)
Care that comes to your house instead of you going to a clinic. It is for children from birth to age 20 who need a lot of support. Staff work with your child and with you, at home.
EASA (Early Assessment and Support Alliance)
A group of programs that helps teenagers and young adults who are experiencing sudden, major changes in how they think and see the world.
